‘A Small Donation’ at ARCADE Scratch Night

ARC Stockton present an evening of rehearsed readings of new short plays by members of Writers ARCADE, the writing group for emerging playwrights (of which I am a member!), following the success of the first new writing scratch night and the Short Sharp Festival. The writers have been working in collaboration with local actors and directors to stage our new ten minute plays for the all-important audience feedback.

My play explores the idea of happiness, how it can be measured and what we might give it up for. Here’s the synopsis:

A Small Donation
Beth is. Alex definitely is. Kerry thinks she is, because she doesn’t really know what ‘it’ is. Are you? How much is it worth to you? And what would you be willing to give it up for?

The evening also features plays by my fellow ARCADE members Mhairi Ledgerwood, Allison Davies, Dan Perry, Kate Chisman, John Chadwick, Scott Young and Nicola Cameron. Tickets are £3.00 (free for ARCADE members) and can be booked online at the ARC Stockton website.

UPDATE!
The Scratch Night was a big success, with a packed audience and lots of valuable feedback collected for the writers:

• Loved it! Superbly staged and written, evocative and thought provoking.
• Fantastic and seeing it from the stage is great!
• Very interesting idea and like the concept of measuring happiness and the fall out of that.
• V thought provoking, liked the ‘questionnaires’ audience interaction.
• Wonderfully original piece, enjoyed the idea of donating happiness.

As many of the audience members expressed an interest in being more involved in the piece rather than just sitting amongst the performers, I’m going to look at developing ‘A Small Donation’ into a more interactive, extended performance – so watch this space!

I managed to record the first 2 minutes of ‘A Small Donation’ (before my iPhone memory was full). Take a look below:
